Home page Beattie on Low Fell

Place Fell

Starting point: Patterdale School  (NY 394161)  Distance: 3.8 miles  Ascent: 1706'

An easy walk to the summit of Place Fell.  The interest on this walk was the development of the new pitched path on the upper section of the walk.  A helicopter was delivering bags of stone from nearby Bannerdale.  On another visit a digger had been improving the lower section of path using the 'soil inversion' technique.

Route: Starting from Patterdale school, walk across fields to Side Farm.  Walk through the farm and passing through a gate, take the upper fell side track to Boredale Hause.  This path zig-zags up the fell in its upper reaches.  This is the original line of the path, which emerges on to the Hause by a ruined building, the 'Chapel in the Hause' named on 1:25000 OS maps.  A newly- constructed path leads to the summit of Place Fell.  Reverse the line of ascent to return to Patterdale.

Bags of stone for path repair

As the ground steepens, stone pitching is used to repair the worn out path

We made it!

On the way down, we were lucky enough to view the helicopter delivering bags of stone on to Place Fell.  This stone had been gathered by hand from a scree slope in nearby Bannerdale.  This is expensive work, the chopper coming from Inverness to perform the shuttle service!  The workers are all volunteers.
