Starting point: Church Bridge,
Troutbeck (Windermere)
(NY 412027) Distance: 5.3 miles Ascent: 1503'
A walk up the ancient Garburn Road to
the summit of Sallows and Sour Howes. I have done this walk
twice now and in similar weather conditions - cloudy with the hint
of rain showers. It is a walk to do when low cloud would spoil
a walk to the higher fells.
Route: Starting from Church Bridge
where there is parking for several cars, use a bridleway on the
other side of the main road to ascend the fell side to join the
ancient Garburn Road. Pass through the disused Applethwaite
quarry and continue up the track to a point near Garburn Pass.
Cross the fence via a stile and follow the substantial wall to
a point where a simple stroll up the fell leads to the summit of
Sallows. Descend to the wall and cross it, following a path
through grass to the summit of Sour Howes. A narrow path leads
south-west off the fell back to the Garburn Road and thence back to
the starting point.

Cloud covers the higher far eastern fells today

By taking a diversion to the right off the track
the disused Applethwaite quarry may be visited

Higher up the fell, the track becomes very stony
The ancient Garburn Road was a drove road linking other roads at
Ambleside and Longsledddale

What do you know? The cloud lifts off the
Kentmere fells!
