Starting point:
The Village Hall, Mungrisdale
(NY 364302) Distance: 5.2 miles Ascent: 1125'
A stroll up on to Souther Fell in the
northern fells. Pronounced 'sooter', this fell has a tale of
spectral armies parading along its flat top at the time of the
Jacobite uprisings in 1745. AW recounted the story in The
Northern Fells and can be read
here.
Route: From the Village Hall walk
up the road to find a gate on to open common and follow the track
beside the River Glenderamackin. At the footbridge, do not
take the main track (an old mine road) but, instead, continue to
follow the river to a footbridge after rounding the flanks of White
Horse Bent. Cross the river and head up to a col where there
are fine views into Mousthwaite Comb. Now head up on to
Souther Fell, following a thin path in the grass. On reaching
the summit walk off the fell in the same direction (NNE). Note
that there is no direct access to the road. Instead, turn
south along a path at NY 362301 and follow the wall to a point where
there is access to the road. Walk back into the village.

Beattie waits patiently to start!
