THE FAR
EASTERN FELLS
'The Far
Eastern Fells rise to the east of Kirkstone Pass and the Patterdale
valley, which together form a natural western boundary to the group.
To north and south these fells run down to low country, and it is on
the east side that difficulty arises in fixing a demarcation line,
for here high ground continues, to merge ultimately into the
Pennines. Nevertheless, it is possible to adopt a satisfactory
boundary, not so much by a selection of obvious natural features as
by observation of the characteristics of the fells in this area. ...
The group
has a main spine running through it, due north and south, that keeps
consistently above 2000' over a distance of eight miles and
culminates midway in the greatest of these fells, High Street.
From this central point there is a general decline in altitude
towards the boundaries of the group in all directions but it is not
to be inferred that all ridges radiate from High Street: on the
contrary, it is the pivot of a complicated system of parallel and
lateral ridges separated by deep valleys that contributes greatly to
the attractiveness of these fells east of Kirkstone.'
