The Ennerdale Fence

Much of the fell land on the south side of the valley from Anglers Crag to Blacksail is designated as a Special Area of Conservation as it is one of the best examples in England of altitudinal succession from lakeshore habitats through to sub alpine meadow.  Unfortunately in bad weather, sheep from the neighbouring common land seek shelter on the alpine meadows causing overgrazing and damage to the sensitive flora.

Work to make the southern boundary stock proof so as to remove overgrazing is underway this summer.  A combination of temporary fencing and walling is being carried out during the summer of 2007.  A helicopter flew out fencing material in April and fencing should start in early May.  Walling should also start in May with the walling contractors living 4 days a week on the fell below Little Gowder Crag.  Temporary accommodation in the form of a portakabin and shed will be removed on completion of the work.

To allow for public access across the boundary a number of stiles will be constructed at key points along the route.

The need for the boundary will be reviewed in 2010 with the Lake District National Park Authority and Friends of the Lake District.
