Home page Beattie on Low Fell

Mellbreak

Starting point: Maggie's Bridge NT car park  (NY 134210)  Distance: 6 miles  Ascent: 1800'

This walk ascends Mellbreak by the north ridge, continuing along the ridge taking in the north and south tops before dropping down into Mosedale.

Route: AW's route on to Mellbreak starting at Maggie's Bridge car park instead of the Kirkstile Inn.  Ascend Mellbreak and follow the ridge over the north and south tops.  Turn down the fell into Mosedale and follow the bridleway back to the Kirkstile Inn with a visit to the Mosedale Holly en route.

Sadly, the weather was not good for photographs - rather too hazy.  Thunder clouds were building up away to the east and there was a lightning strike on Grisedake Pike during the afternoon.  However, sunny conditions prevailed on Mellbreak for most of the afternoon.

Mellbreak scree

There are two routes on to Mellbreak according to Eric Robson - 'straight up the scree' or 'the wimps route'
I take 'the wimps route' out to the left as I have Beattie!

Mellbreak north top

Finally, we arrive at the north top after a breathless ascent
Rather too hazy for good photography

Dropping down along the ridge between the two tops
This view is looking back to the north top - heather and grass abounds

From here, the north top looks higher
In fact, the south top is superior in height by 8 feet!

Crummock water

Again, the view is rather spoilt by a thick haze
Crummock Water and beyond is Buttermere

Mosedale

Dropping down into Mosedale
This gate is now redundant - the track runs alongside!

Mosedale Holly Tree

The Mosedale Holly Tree (ilex aquifoliam)
The only tree named in this way on the OS map in Lakeland!

Mosedale Holly Tree

It certainly is a fine specimen, and, judging by girth of the trunk, very ancient

Mosedale

Walking in Mosedale along a delightful grassy track

Last view of Mellbreak before we reach the Kirkstile Inn for a welcome drink!

Wonderful views and Beattie looks so slim and fit. Must be all that walking!
