We stayed at Finningham over May Day
Bank Holiday weekend at Stanwell Farm, a Caravan Club CL* site.
A lovely mid-Suffolk village characterised by its fine timber-framed
cottages. The annual Flower Festival is held at this weekend,
which is worth a visit. There is a superb circular walk from
the site about 2.5 miles in length, just right for an early morning
stroll. At this time of the year, there is a fine variety of
spring flowers. An added bonus for
Beattie is that she can complete
most of the walk off-lead!
*CL site - Certified Location (a site taking a maximum of five
caravans)
A crab apple tree at
the beginning of our walk

A muddy byway leads to the railway

Passing stitchwort on the way ...

... and white deadnettle

We walk through the arch under the railway

Graffiti is not new!
I am sure that H Clark had no idea that his handiwork would be
displayed for the whole world to see?

The main railway line from Norwich to London

Suffolk streams tend to be slow flowing (like the
pace of life!)

In this field we sometimes meet horses ...

... we do today and
Beattie is put on her lead
until we pass by

An owl nesting box has been put up here

We pass an area of marsh ...

... with patches of colourful marsh marigolds

The footpath now takes us uphill (well, only 15 m
of height)! It's very gentle walking!

A delightful shady footpath

Crossing the railway - this time over the top!

Water towers are quite common in East
Anglia

The footpath back to the village

Nearly back!

The village green - deserted at this
time of day

The church where the Flower Festival
is held
And some of Finningham's cottages ...

'Suffolk pink' is a traditional colour
here

Green Farm is a sixteenth century
building - and rather grand

Yeoman's Cottage stands adjacent to
the church on the village green ...

... and another on the other side of
the church

This house has two rather fine oval
pargeting panels - another traditional form of decoration in
this part of East Anglia
The oval panels are plaster relief work

Over the stream and a barn conversion

for the weekend
